EU 20% energy efficiency target discussions scaled up

EU energy ministers met this week for informal discussions that will shed light on their positions related to the EU's upcoming energy efficiency action plan. The two-day meeting, which started on September 6, will concentrate on protecting energy consumers, while the next day was dedicated to energy infrastructure. On the second day, ministers also discussed energy efficiency at a behind-closed-doors lunch.

WA connects to the grid with solar power projects

One of the WA’s biggest privately-owned solar power projects has opened today at the eco-friendly Ocean Park holiday destination at Shark Bay. A back-up diesel and wind generator augment the system, a similar hybrid model to that launched last week in Marble Bar, which is powered by the world’s first hybrid diesel-solar energy plant. Meanwhile, a new gas power station will provide rapid back up for intermittent renewable generation on WA’s south west electricity network.

Australia’s largest commercial solar panel launched

Medical device company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Medical has installed what it says is Australia’s largest commercially-funded solar panel grid at its regional headquarters, based in North Ryde, Sydney. The company spent $1 million on a 220kW Sanyo system for its roof, which will save around 10% of its electricity costs.

WA research team converts mallee to fuel

The WA Sustainable Energy Association (WA SEA) has welcomed a “breakthrough” by researchers at Curtin University in converting biomass, such as mallee trees, into clean combustible gaseous fuels that can be used to generate electricity. Biomass-to-power is the world’s third largest form of renewable energy after wind and solar. Investment in new capacity in this sector was $10.4 billion 2009, up 16% on 2008.

CEC calls for carbon price ahead of election

The Clean Energy Council CEO Matthew Warren has called on the contending political parties to demonstrate genuine leadership in addressing the risk of dangerous climate change. Warren said the effort would require a carbon price as soon as possible, supported by a list of 10 measures, which include the creation of a Green Investment Commission to consider the creation of a Green Investment Bank.

Energy efficiency panel puts forward ideas for 2020

A panel led by CEO of the Energy Efficiency Council Rob Murray-Leach has called for closer collaboration between businesses and governments at all levels and has discussed how they can move forward with tougher energy efficiency policies. Murray-Leach kicked off the debate by describing the strength of support for energy efficiency as “pitiful”.

Australia and New Zealand can cut their greenhouse emissions by at least 15% by 2020 in economically beneficial ways, according to business leaders. But to do so businesses need a carbon price and a full range of other measures tailored to the specific needs of each sector. Meanwhile a panel of business leaders put the case forward for energy efficiency at the Australia-New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference in Sydney.

Toyota aims for 40% energy cuts with tri-gen plant

Toyota Australia’s corporate headquarters in Port Melbourne will this weekend begin to install a tri-generation plant. The installation of the ‘tri-gen plant’ is the next stage of Toyota’s plan to reduce energy use at its headquarters by 40% from 2007/2008 levels. Toyota is expected to spend $1.5 million on the project, which has an expected pay back period of five years.

Australian Paper moves towards online carbon management

Co-generation tops the energy equation

Co-generation in commercial buildings far outweighs the benefits of using renewable energy or Greenpower, says Ian Osborne of Floth Sustainable Building Consultants. To back it up he points to ISPT’s Green Square North Tower in Brisbane, which has become the first commercial building with a co-generation plant to be awarded a 5 Star National Australian Built Environment Reporting System (NABERS) Energy whole building rating.

Govt kicks off five-year ICT sustainability strategy

The Federal Government has finally initiated a five-year Information Communications Technology (ICT) reform program, which includes the development of a whole-of-government ICT sustainability plan. A key part of the plan mandates that ICT suppliers will need to participate in the National Packaging Covenant by July 2011 and adopt an environmental management system aligned to ISO14001.

International smart grid alliance launched

At the first ever Clean Energy Ministerial meeting in the US on July 19 and 20, ministers from 15 countries including Australia launched an International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) to accelerate the development and deployment of smart electricity grids around the world.

Fossil fuel subsidies 12 times more than renewables

Global subsidies for fossil fuels dwarf the support given to renewable energy sources by a factor of 12, reveals new research by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Meanwhile, the UN reported renewables again topped fossil fuels last year in new generation in the US and Europe.

Vic energy saving scheme targets SMEs

The Victorian Government has beaten the Federal Government in the race to put in place a climate-change policy, announcing it will double an existing state energy efficiency target. It aims to reduce the state's greenhouse emissions by 5.4 million tonnes in the next three years by, among other things, including 500,000 small and medium businesses in the equation.

Wartsila’s nutty biodiesel alternative

A new option in terms of replacing incumbent diesel engines and power stations with a biodiesel-powered alternative has reached Australia. Already trialled by its global parent company, Wärtsilä Australia’s environmental services division is installing engines driven by a rich oil obtained from a naturally occurring product, the jatropha nut.

Siemens’ energy perspective brightens

There are signs of an upturn in sections of the global market for energy technology infrastructure, said global electronics giant Siemens in a market update. “Not all of our divisions have bottomed out, but the energy market is now reaching its low point,” said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of the company’s energy division.

Energy efficiency solutions to cost 240 trillion by 2050: IEA report

Funding for low-carbon energy research, development and demonstration increased by 33% between 2005 and 2008, reversing a declining trend that started in the early 1980s, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). However, it says there is still a need for “massive decarbonisation” worldwide in order to reduce CO2 emissions and to transition to a new age of electrification by 2050.

Biomass energy “the new wind”: KPMG report

The Federal Government’s decision to push an emissions trading scheme (ETS) back to 2013 and the current uncertainties surrounding climate change policy have slowed merger and acquisition (M&A) investment in the renewable energy sector, according to a new KPMG global survey. The research shows the US, India and China are the most appealing markets to companies and investors because of government incentives.

Auditor General fails WA on energy efficiency targets

WA Auditor General Colin Murphy has given the WA Government a fail for its inability to reduce greenhouse emissions and energy bills under the Energy Smart Government (ESG) program. Murphy found that if government agencies had met their energy reduction target they could have saved over $50 million over the last seven years and cut greenhouse emissions by nearly 10%, some 350,000 tonnes.

A new renewable energy reality by 2020

All of Australia's energy could come from renewable sources by 2020, according to lobby group Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE). Wind and Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) with molten salt storage are the two primary technologies in the frame, with some backup from biomass and existing hydro. Key though is modelling for the report that assumes by 2020 energy use will drop by half through energy efficiency savings.

A new policy framework for the energy efficiency puzzle

The Energy Efficiency Council has delivered what it believes to be the “missing piece” in Australia’s carbon puzzle, unveiling a seven-policy platform it says would go a long way to correcting the current priorities for greenhouse reductions. A key recommendation is for a National Efficiency Scheme based on the state-based trading schemes, which EEC chief Rob Murray-Leach sees as a “no brainer”.

AEMC considers costs of smart meters

Capping of sRET would cut solar panel industry in half

Households looking to install solar panels will miss out on assistance if a cap is imposed on the household renewable power that can be credited under the proposed expanded renewable energy target (eRET), according to the Senate Committee on Environment, Communications and the Arts. Its report says the eRET will reduce Australia’s greenhouse emissions by around 380 million tonnes by 2020.

Energy efficient buildings to cut emissions by 46.7Mt

Three policy measures targeting energy efficiency in buildings could cut greenhouse emissions by 46.7 megatonnes (Mt) by 2030, some 5.5% of national output, according to the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC). Even under a revised Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) reintroduced in 2013 they would cut carbon by 33.2 Mt.

Dyesol and Pilkington merge for solar glass

The joint venture between Dyesol and US-based Pilkington North America has resulted in the formation of a new company, DyeTec Solar. DTS will develop and deliver the standard technology platform solution for mass manufacture of building integrated and automotive integrated photovoltaics, as well as interior photovoltaic generating glass based products, powered displays and security devices.

Qld budget shines $115m on solar industry

The Kogan Creek Coal fired powered station, near the Queensland town of Dalby, will be home to the largest solar thermal project in the southern hemisphere, with the Federal and State Governments now both plowing funds into the initiative. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh announced $35 million for the Kogan project as the centerpiece of a $115 million solar package unveiled in the state’s 2010/11 budget.

Rudd looks to the heavens, finds green power for WA

With the Rudd Government’s back down on emissions trading contributing to the battering it has copped in opinion polls recently, expect plenty of green announcements in the lead up to the federal election. On Wednesday, for example, $47.3 million was earmarked to build the nation’s largest direct heat geothermal facility in WA as part of Australia’s bid to host the world’s strongest radio telescope.
